Wiffle Ball World Series

Today we hosted our first Wiffle Ball World Series, and it turned into exactly what we hoped it would be.
We had 34 kids from 4th through 6th grade sign up, enough for four teams. We split them up evenly, let them pick their own team names, and our high school baseball players took it from there…coaching, umpiring, keeping score, encouraging kids and helping keep everything moving.
Every team got four games. After three round-robin games, the “Golden Bananas” and “The Ummmms” played for 3rd place, with The Ummmms winning 10-9 on a walk-off home run. Then the “Dino Nuggets” and “Dill Pickles” played for the championship, with the Dill Pickles winning 12-11 on another walk-off homer.
You couldn’t have scripted it much better.
But the best part really had nothing to do with the scores.
These younger kids looked at our high school players like they were rockstars. And our older guys embraced it. They brought energy, coached them up, celebrated with them, laughed with them and made sure every kid felt like they were part of something.
I’m honestly not sure who had more fun …the little kids or the high school kids.
That’s why days like this matter. High school athletics should be about more than wins and losses. It’s about giving older kids opportunities to lead, giving younger kids people to look up to, building relationships between generations of Wildcats, and creating memories that make kids want to keep coming back to the field.
On a beautiful afternoon, we got 34 kids out to the baseball field just to play, compete, laugh and have fun.
That’s a pretty good day
